Bachmann, next to Hornby is the best known model train manufacturer in the Global market. The two most extensive product ranges have garnered an enviable reputation for quality and reliability. There will always be detractors but Bachmann certainly stands out. Hornby were the first to exploit the international market so it is an accolade to them that they have made such international inroads.
This company has a very strong product range and they ensure it is readily available. It is this statement that I make when asked why they are doing so well. There is a huge array of products including locomotives, rolling stock of all descriptions, scenery, and all manner of accessories and all visible online. You can request a catalogue online and it is jammed with all manner of interest for the model railroad enthusiast.
The Bachmann products form the backbone of their product range as would be expected. There are two more ranges and they should be considered if you are thinking of their products for your next purchase. The sheer number of products is impressive. I know that the number of different products will surprise even the most experienced model train enthusiast, for instance. Just in HO gauge there are 32 train sets 350 locomotives including steam. In addition there is a Thomas the tank engine department, track, scenery, control systems, and a host of accessories and all for the HO scale.
Bachmann is an evocative name according to many because it has a European ‘feel’ about it. It is possible that the international market has been influenced by that. Their global network of distributors have provided a secure position in terms of stocking for the local market and making the right products available. International exchange rates are currently a bit of a lottery but that applies to all exporters. Bachmann model trains and train sets are available all over the world but does it make them better?
It is most unlikely that a global exporter would not have a stand-out product range and a support structure to back it up. There is no doubt that model railroaders are a fickle bunch but Bachmann seems to have positioned itself internationally in a very good place so their quality and reliability you could say is proven.
This company’s products will almost certainly form at least a part of most track layouts, particularly in the US, simply because there is so much available and actually this makes it very easy to start a layout with a simple model boxed set. Most new modellers start with a boxed set anyway so it is understandable if the new modeller to expand his layout from the same manufacturer although it is not absolutely necessary. Most modellers will look for consistently so with DCC systems available and other accessories from the same maker and of course it makes sense. They do not make the best of everything though so it is often the case that scenery or other accessories will be bought from an alternative supplier.
In summary. Bachmann does have a fantastic product range of very high quality locomotives and rolling stock as well as a whole raft of accessories. Possibly not the best at everything but their product range as a whole is substantial and high quality and certainly keeps their competitors busy.
